Q:
A player is required or elects to stroke once again at the Titleist AP2 Irons spot where his previous stroke was played. He can find out where the spot is through observing the divot hole that made by his previous stroke. The behind that divot hole he immediately drops a ball. What is the ruling when the ball rolls nearer the hole than the spot where the previous stroke was played, but not more than two club-lengths from where it first struck the ground?
A:
A ball should be re-dropped if it finally rests nearer the hole than "its original position or estimated position ... unless otherwise permitted by the Rules." TaylorMade R7 Irons The original position is the spot where his previous stroke was made. The ball must be re-dropped since it rolled nearer the hole than that spot.
Nevertheless, when facing this situation a player usually cannot determine exactly the spot where he stroked last time. In those cases, the player has satisfied the Callaway X-20 Irons requirements of the Rule if he tried his best to estimate the spot. The estimated spot is treated as the specific spot (see Rule 20-2b) and the ball must be re-dropped if it stops nearer the hole than the estimated spot.
A ball also should be re-dropped when the spot where a ball is to be placed is not determinable and the player is required to drop the Ping K15 Driver ball as near as possible to its original spot.
